Au Gratin Potatoes
Ingredients
| 3 Tablespoon | unsalted butter, divided | | 3/4 Pound | Idaho potatoes (about 4 small) |
| 3/4 Pound | yams (1 large) |
| 1/2 Cup | Gruyère cheese, grated |
| 1/2 Cup | Parmesan cheese, grated |
| 1 Cup | heavy cream |
| 1 Teaspoon | salt |
| 3/4 Teaspoon | pepper |
| 1/2 Teaspoon | nutmeg |
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Butter a 1-½ or 2-quart baking dish with 1 tablespoon softened butter. Peel potatoes and yam, and slice 1/8-inch thick. Arrange a layer of potatoes and yams in baking dish and evenly sprinkle ¼ cup of each cheese on top. Add another layer of potatoes and yams followed by remaining cheese. Finish with a final layer of potatoes and yams. In a small bowl, whisk cream with salt, pepper and nutmeg. Pour cream mixture evenly over potatoes. Dot remaining butter over top and cover with foil. Bake for 1 hour and remove foil. Bake for additional 10-15 minutes, until golden brown and fork tender. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.
